NHS Trainee Doctors – Fixed Term Contract

All doctors, once they have completed their five years as a medical student, will have to complete their foundation year 1 and 2 (F1 and F2). After this, they will move into either Core or Speciality training for a period of 3 years (CT1/ST1, CT2/ST2, and CT3/ST3). This is NHS typically followed by another 5 years for those in Speciality Training (ST4 to ST8).

NHS trainee doctors are employed on fixed term contracts through NHS trusts, with a typical contract length of 1 year.

We treat NHS trainee doctors on fixed term contracts differently to other fixed term contracts.

Document Requirements:

  • Copy of current contract or letter from NHS trust confirming income, hours worked, and start date
  • If intending to use higher salary in new contract, then copy of onward contract or let from NHS trust confirming new income, hours worked, and start date
  • Latest 1 months’ pay slips (latest 12 weeks’ pay slips if paid weekly)
  • If there is overtime, outside of the contractual unsociable hours, then:
    • Latest 3 months’ payslips are required, and
    • Latest P60

Additional Requirements

  • Completed F1 training
  • If using higher income on the contract that is yet to start, this can be considered providing we receive a payslip prior to the loan completing that supports the income stated on the contract
  • All income is to be added as 100% salary income, this is due to the “unsociable hours incremental weighting” being a contractual element of the customer’s income, i.e. there is no option to opt out
  • Any other overtime beyond contracted is hours will be assessed as standard Overtime.
